Use Those Hand Pruners

Cutting stems and branches in the garden should be done with the correct tools. It’s not enough to simply break them off with your hands because this will cause significant trauma and damage to the plants. The aim of pruning is to shape and control the growth of plants and to do so without introducing disease or other problems to the shrubs or trees that are being cut back.

You should use a hand pruner for the best results and there are a couple of different types of hand pruners that you will want to choose from: bypass pruners and anvil pruners. Without going too deeply into the whys and wherefores about hand pruners, bypass pruners are to be used for cutting back live stems while anvil pruners are to be used for cutting dead twigs and stems.

Many gardeners don’t go anywhere in their garden without their hand pruners. You never know when you will come across a spent flower that should be deheaded or a broken stem that should be removed. With a pair of hand pruners close by the cleaning up job can be done as you move from place to place in the garden.

A New Watering System

Always on the lookout to improve the effectiveness of the water system in my garden and the greenhouse I found that many people are touting the use of misting nozzles. These little devices deliver a fine mist of water (or perhaps chemicals if that is what you would prefer) to the plants to keep the moisture up on a regular basis.

The water saving features of the mist delivery means that you won’t be wasting huge amounts of water when you irrigate. The misting nozzles come in a variety of materials depending on either your budget or the durability that you would like the nozzles to have.

Possibly the hardest wearing are going to be brass misting nozzles which will give you years of service without a hint of trouble. Most of us should be able to remember the old brass hose fittings that have since been replaced by the cheaper plastic versions. Although we are assured that plastic is a worthy replacement I think we are all aware that it is a lighter, more fragile substance that tends to become brittle as it gets older.

At the end of the day I will lean towards paying a few bucks more and equipping myself with a set of brass misting nozzles, knowing that down the track the overall cost is going to work out to be less.

The Study For the Backyard or Playground

There are a number of studies around to indicate that improvements in technology for artificial grass is rendering many of the opposing arguments no longer valid. There is an abundance of products on the market for you to choose from now, all promising this, that or the other.

This, too, is alleviated by synthetic grass and the blight of having to abandon games due to unsafe or unfit surfaces is removed. Synthetic grass is a way to find even more opportunities to use an area both a playing field or the backyard. If your backyard was perfect and required no upkeep that is. You can always play on the swings or feed the ducks. This is something I experienced.

Because synthetic grass that is laid indoors doesn’t have to contend with the problem of how to last through outdoor temperatures or from the constant cleaning required due to debris being blown onto the surface, it is more comparable to a carpet. Preferences for appearance and application will vary for each individual; therefore you should look at grass already laid to get a better idea of how it looks in a garden.

All of these thoughts seemed relevant as I decided what I should do in my own background. At one stage the backyard was giving the impression that a good thatch of grass would grow. This was actually encouraging, so I continued on and found that the area I cleared gave me plenty of depth to plant the transplanted Buffalo along with a heap of organic matter.

Commit To A Synthetic Grass Lawn

It takes a large commitment to decide to rip out a natural lawn and plant an artificial lawn. If everything goes smoothly the process should be relatively quick and easy. It definitely helps if you have done your homework and have worked out your budget and where the synthetic grass you’ve chosen is going to come from.

A new synthetic lawn installed in place of the old grass is going to look sensational to begin with but it will take regular maintenance to keep it looking good. Just because you’ve heard the salesmen or women telling you that one of the virtues of synthetic grass is that there is no maintenance doesn’t make it true. The lawn will have to be swept or hosed clean every so often to remove the debris that may have built up.

The build up of debris in your synthetic lawn surface could be a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and mould. The growth will also make the synthetic lawn start to look shabby, certainly not what you would be aiming for when installing it.

Make sure that you know what you’re getting into when you go out to buy your synthetic lawn. In some cases the salesmen will tell you all kinds of rumors about other products compared to theirs. As long as you know the facts about synthetic grass then you won’t find yourself paying more than you should.
